For Immediate Release:
Indianapolis (March 26, 2009) – The United Way of Central Indiana has recognized OneAmerica as a top 12 financial contributor for its fundraising efforts in the 2008 Live United campaign. Additionally, OneAmerica was named a Company that Cares winner, an honor the enterprise has received since 1994 for making exceptional commitments toward running a successful workplace campaign and leading the way in improving lives and communities throughout central Indiana.
“It’s an outstanding achievement to be recognized by an organization that gives back to the community in monumental ways,” said Dayton H. Molendorp, OneAmerica chairman, president and CEO. “During a troubling economic time, it’s comforting to know that our employees still recognize the community’s need and have given so selflessly.”
This year, OneAmerica employees gave more than $266,000 that was matched by the company. The grand total was $514,231, which will be used to assist central Indiana human service organizations in making positive impacts toward improving the lives of those with critical needs. A committee of volunteers chaired by Corporate Support Services Vice President Sean Cole developed brochures and a commercial featuring employees that discuss why they give to the United Way. The commercial, which included personal stories, aired on the company’s digital display network during the campaign. Company-wide e-mails containing e-pledge links, portal announcements and banners hung in the OneAmerica lobbies also encouraged employees to give.
“Growing up on the inner east side of Indianapolis, I didn’t have much in the way of luxuries, Cole explained. “My parents worked hard and sacrificed to build a life for my brother, sister and me that would be easier than theirs had been. While my family did have to forgo many “wants,” my parents taught us to understand the broad divide between want and need. Therefore, I made a promise to myself that when I grew up, I would find a way to support those who were most in need. That’s why I give back to my community and why I encouraged others to do the same. Through United Way, I’ve found a way to direct my gifts where they will do the most good for the greatest number of people. “
