OneAmerica® Observes Life Insurance Awareness Month with Public Health Fair

Visitors Learn Tips to Stay Healthy, Reminded to Evaluate Life Insurance Needs

Indianapolis-September 20, 2007

In support of Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM), the OneAmerica companies joined the cause by hosting a public health fair on Sept. 20 at the OneAmerica Tower. LIAM is an industry-wide effort coordinated by the nonprofit Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE). Each year, LIFE is joined in this educational initiative by more than 100 of the nation’s leading insurance companies and other industry groups. All share the same objective: to end the unnecessary financial suffering that so often occurs when a loved one dies.

OneAmerica marked the annual campaign by hosting a public health fair. Visitors could choose from a variety of health screenings from diabetes to vision and blood pressure in addition to gaining valuable information on nutrition, provided by the National Institute of Fitness and Sport (NIFS) and smoking cessation provided by Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation (ITPC).

“The first step toward taking good care of your family, is to take care of yourself,” said Dayton H. Molendorp, OneAmerica chairman, president and CEO. “We fully support any effort that encourages a lifestyle that can help keep a family together longer.”

This year’s LIAM spokeswoman is actress and comedian, Molly Shannon, whose mother died in a car accident when she was only four years old. To hear Molly’s ReaLife story, click here http://www.life-line.org/ .

Millions of Americans have inadequate life insurance, or none at all. Those with coverage have far less than most experts recommend to ensure a secure financial future for their families. In fact, ownership of life insurance has been declining for decades and the impact is being felt in very human terms today. When a loved one dies without adequate life insurance coverage, surviving family members often face very difficult financial consequences due to the loss of the income that the deceased provided to the family. The survivors may have to work additional jobs or longer hours, borrow money from friends and family, move to smaller, less expensive housing, or put plans for a child’s education on hold to provide basic needs for the remaining family members.

With so many Americans in a financially vulnerable situation today, the life insurance industry has created a month-long public awareness campaign aimed at encouraging the public to take stock of their life insurance needs.
